As students transition from summer back to school, the lapse in learning and the loss of information that occurs over the summer often makes the first weeks of school frustrating and unproductive for both teachers and students. Carson-Dellosa, the leading provider of supplemental education materials, recently published a landmark study revealing that 85% of teachers spend two weeks or more at the beginning of the school year re-teaching critical skills forgotten from the previous year. More than half of these teachers will spend a month reviewing skills. For many children, especially those already struggling, summer learning loss can add up to long-term academic setbacks.
Parents recognize this problem as well. The Carson-Dellosa study also found that 95% of parents believe that if their children continued learning throughout the summer, they would be more successful in the long run. However, they feel uninformed about this gap in learning, with 75% stating that they wish schools would provide more information and resources to parents to help combat ?summer learning loss?.
Other studies researching the summer learning gap report that in the short-term, students can lose up to two and a half months of learning over the summer, the most significant losses occurring in essential math and spelling skills. In addition to this, summer learning loss can add up to staggering effects later in a student?s academic career. Certain studies show that by sixth grade, those students who experienced summer learning loss at the elementary level could be up to two years behind their peers.
Summer may be an important break for students and teachers, but it is imperative that learning not take a break as well. ?As dedicated advocates of education both in school and at home, we believe learning can and should be a year-round endeavor, even during summer break,? said Judy L. Harris, Carson-Dellosa CEO. ?We understand that many children often return to school at a disadvantage, having lost the skills they worked so hard to achieve just a few months earlier. Commonwealth Connections Academy?s state-winning Real World Design Challenge team placed second in the country at the 2012 National Real World Design Challenge, topping 28 other teams.
Commonwealth Connections Academy is a leading virtual public charter school that serves students in grades K-12 from across Pennsylvania. Commonwealth Connections Academy was the sole virtual school to qualify and participate in this year?s National Competition, and is also the only virtual school to place within the top three nationally in the four-year history of the Real World Design Challenge.
An annual and nationally recognized program, the Real World Design Competition is sponsored by a public-private partnership (including partners such as Cessna Aircraft and NASA Langley Research Center) with the goal of increasing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and providing students access to real world engineering experiences. This year, 45 total states, independent states, and territories participated in the Challenge, while 30 total teams moved on or participated in the National Competition.
Challenged to create an aerodynamic and energy-efficient sports aircraft, the Commonwealth Connections Academy team utilized engineering software to develop the winning blueprint, deemed viable in the real world. As students of a cyber school, the team members met only virtually to engineer their prize-winning craft.
The Commonwealth Connections Academy Innovators ? Jacob Antonio Whipkey, Richard Ciora, Darnell Holmes, Athena Kao, Mikayla Nester, Devin Slaugenhaupt, and Courtney Thurston? are freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors from all areas of Pennsylvania. The team is led by Athena Kao, a junior from Phoenixville, PA, who also participated on Commonwealth Connections Academy?s state winning team in 2010-11.
Gathered in Harrisburg before heading to Washington, D.C., the team was excited, although readily admitted they were a bit nervous, even though some members were presenting at Nationals for the second time.
?We?re confident that our [aircraft] design will work, but still a bit nervous as the design and our team are subject to the opinions of the judging panel,? explained Darnell Holmes.
On Friday, April 20 the team had the chance to meet in person, as they excitedly gathered at Commonwealth Connections Academy?s Harrisburg teaching center with their team mentor and Commonwealth Connections Academy chemistry teacher Ann Camp, before traveling to D.C. for the presentation and judging of their National design.
?The team and I both knew that Commonwealth Connections Academy had a very strong design going into the Challenge,? said Camp. ?But knowing this beforehand didn?t dilute my pride or extreme excitement for the students when our team name was announced Saturday afternoon as a finalist to participate in the championship round ? held at the National Air and Space Museum.?
Camp continued, ?The team has proved through their tireless effort and innovation that each student has a bright future ahead in whatever career they choose. Whether they start their college or professional career in a STEM-related field or go down another avenue, participating in real world challenges like this prepares students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers in any capacity, industry or environment.?

Adirondack Leadership Expeditions, a character-development wilderness program for troubled teenagers, has announced a partnership with Park City Independent School to offer up to four high school course credits for students who successfully complete the program. Qualifying students will receive an accredited transcript of their academic work completed during their participation in the wilderness therapy program for troubled teens.
?We are pleased to announce this partnership and the ability to offer students course credits for the education they earn while engaged in their therapeutic journey,? said Thomas Ahern, MA, Director of Clinical Outreach for the program.
Adirondack Leadership Expeditions for troubled teens, through a partnership with Park City Independent, will provide credits for Physical Education (1.0 credit), English/Creative Writing (0.5 credit), Personal Development (0.5 credit), Psychology (0.5 credit), Health (0.5 credit), and Outdoor Living (1.0 credit). The minimum length of stay to receive any credit is 30 days in the wilderness adventure therapy program, with an average length of stay closer to 55 days.
?The fact that ALE students are living in the wilderness without the responsibilities or distractions of home life allows for more instructional time and experiences than traditional school settings, and enables them to earn up to four credits at an accelerated pace,? said Ahern. ?For example, the credit in physical education is based on the same Carnegie Units that a typical high school would use as the standard for instruction and includes everything from backpacking to camping, team building, group problem solving and learning about safety related to living in the elements on a daily basis.?
He adds, ?Earning credits can be a tremendous opportunity for our students to maintain their academics ? or make up lost credits ? while they work through their behavioral and emotional issues, which is the main reason they are here.?
Park City Independent?s curriculum and credit capture program is fully accredited by the nationally recognized Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC). Credits earned can be transferred to other schools within or outside of the state of New York, and are accepted by colleges, universities, and government employers across the nation.

Question by C B: Does it matter that you go to a low tier law school if you are going to be a real estate attorney?
Could a person take the easy route and go to the John Marshall School of Law instead of going to a higher tier school and still find success in real estate law?

No. Obviously you will never get into a big law firm’s real estate department or even a smaller prestigious firm’s real estate department if you graduate from a diploma mill like John Marshall School of Law, so I’m assuming you have a more modest definition of success and might mean any small law firm with a real estate practice that would start you out at a low salary of about 20k-40k with the hopes of eventually making 70-90k in about 5 years or so. Even there it is highly probable that you will be competing with job candidates with superior academic credentials to a John Marshall Law Degree.
Real estate is the most devastated practice area in U.S. law right now, and much of the business that went to small firm real estate practices before the recession is never going to come back. The subprime residential mortgage market is dead and buried and in general the credit market for real estate transactions will also take a long time to free up enough to regenerate some of the lost work for real estate lawyers.
I don’t see how going to John Marshall School of Law is the easy route financially either as it charges as much as or close to what most Tier 1 law schools charge. To be blunt, if John Marshall School of Law is the only law school that you can get into because of your academics and LSAT score then you shouldn’t pursue a career as a lawyer. If you’re graduating magna cum laude and have an LSAT score of 165-180 and John Marshall is offering you a full ride, I still think it’s a bad decision because in terms of job marketability you’ll be getting exactly what you paid for.
